Flip the Script: Trapped in an “All or Nothing” Mindset?

We have all had those days—or sometimes those whole weeks—where we are constantly questioning ourselves. Let’s face it, we can be our own harshest critics. You might find yourself exhausted, feeling like you’re falling short, and wondering why things just aren’t clicking. When you’re in the middle of that frustration, it’s easy to overlook a major culprit: “All or Nothing” thinking. This mindset is a common barrier to true wellness. It’s the belief that if you aren’t doing everything perfectly, you’re failing entirely. But what if the problem isn’t your commitment or your ability? What if the problem is simply the approach?

If you suspect this pattern is holding you back, here are the three major signs of “All or Nothing” thinking—and how to start shifting that perspective.

1. Feeling Paralyzed by Overwhelm: Do you ever have that nagging feeling where you have such a heavy load that you can’t tell where the beginning ends or the end begins? It’s a frustrating place to be, and I’ve been there too—it’s not pretty.Usually, this happens because we are looking at the whole mountain instead of the next simple step. When you view your entire wellness journey as one massive, all-or-nothing task, it’s impossible not to feel overwhelmed.

2. Tendency To Just “Give Up”: This is one of the biggest tip-offs. You might find yourself thinking, “Why bother? I’ve already tried, and I failed before. This time will be no different.” In psychology, we call this a self-fulfilling prophecy. When you tell yourself out of the gate that it’s not going to work, you’re setting the stage for failure before you even start. Plans don’t always go exactly as we hope, but deciding you’ve failed before you’ve begun is a sure way to stay stuck. You’ll never know if you never try is very true. Knowing can go both ways. Whether completely successful or not, it is an invitation to explore, learn and grow our inner self. View it as an opportunity.

3. You Fail to Acknowledge the Wins: Have you ever had a conversation with yourself where you realize you’re just beating yourself up? You don’t even need other people in your life to do it—you’re doing a great job of it in your own mind. Even when a small part of your plan goes well, the “All or Nothing” mindset refuses to celebrate it because it wasn’t everything. Go on – give yourself some credit for the steps you achieved, not matter how small, they are significant. Perhaps the action step was a perspective shift. That counts immensely because real change starts in our mindsets first.

Oh yes, it’s time to Flip that Script!

Creating “The Pause”: If you recognize some or all of these patterns and say, “Yep, that’s me,” know that you don’t have to navigate them alone. One of the biggest challenges is simply allowing yourself space to self-reflect. In that space of contemplation—what I call “The Pause”—is where the first step of self-assessment and acknowledgement finds its voice. Before taking any action steps, the initiation of change occurs in this cherished, reflective space. Perhaps this is the first moment you’ve had today, this week, or longer to think about your needs.

You are worthy of this space. I encourage you to savor and protect the integrity of this time—leave the laundry list of to-do’s and checklists off the table. Give yourself 5-10 minutes to start cultivating a moment just for you. Keep a journal nearby, light a candle to honor the quiet, or incorporate a furry blanket and a warm cup of tea. Whatever you do to honor yourself, make it your own—make it fun and enjoyable so that you truly look forward to this time for your best self.

It Starts in the Mind. If you find that you need more than just a pause—if you need a partner—I am here for you. Flipping the script starts in our mind first, and sometimes, you need a voice in your life with the wisdom, knowledge, and professional understanding to help you navigate out of the “all or nothing” cycle. Flipping the script also isn’t about working harder; it’s about working with a deeper strategy that addresses foundational roots that respects your values and inner strengths. As a certified health coach, my role is to help you navigate out of these stuck patterns. We’ll work together to identify those limiting thoughts, pivot to sustainable habits, and—most importantly—celebrate the progress you’re actually making.
